Denver’s Road Home has helped many of Denver’s homeless get off the streets. See how they were able to rebuild their lives and get on the right track.

Maria's Success Story

I won’t be satisfied until I finish college and become a nurse. I have a long road ahead of me, but I know I can do it because I’ve achieved so much already.

You see, just over a year ago, I was homeless. I was living in a women’s shelter, and I had no hope that I could create a better future for myself.

I had tried to get a job, and I had several interviews. But the minute they found I was homeless, the interview was over. The way people looked at me when they found out I was homeless was demoralizing. It was pity, I saw in their eyes – and I couldn’t stand it.

I was at the end of my rope when I saw a flyer for a job placement service funded by Denver’s Road Home and offered by Bayaud Industries. My phone call to Bayaud was the beginning of a new life for me.

I thought I was only suited for an entry-level job in retail, but my caseworker encouraged me to consider every possibility. She asked me what my dream job would be, and I told her that what I really, really wanted to do was be a nurse.

I don’t know how she did it, but she found me a job as a patient transporter at a hospital. I loved it! And it confirmed my desire to go into nursing.

I moved out of the shelter on July 4 – Independence Day. Now I have a place of my own, and a sense of pride in my accomplishments.

I transitioned from my temporary job at the hospital, to a permanent job in the laundry department at an assisted living facility that provides educational benefits to all employees. This allowed me to fulfill my dream of going back to school. I arrive at work at 5:30 every morning, and leave by 5 p.m. to go to night school. I’ll admit that my schedule is exhausting, but I have no intention of quitting.

I’ll never be homeless again. I will be great nurse. I know I can.
